The Department of Surgery and the Division of Vascular Surgery are proud to announce a major milestone for Alameda Health System: the successful performance of our first TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) procedure at the state-of-the-art Highland Hospital Cardiovascular Catheterization Laboratory. BEST-CLI is an international research study aimed at figuring out the best treatment for people with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) - also known as poor blood flow, and associated with Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI). It is Federally funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health.  As of November 2022, BEST-CLI enrollment ended in October of 2019, and completed a minimum of 24 months' follow-up for all patients in October of 2021. Vascular Surgery Integrated Resident, Joel Ramirez, MD (PGY-3), was recently selected as a Fellow for this year's Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Physician-Scientist Fellowship Program. The CZ Biohub Physician-Scientist Fellowship will support our work investigating the role of circulating and vascular tissue-specific microRNAs in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms. This translational study will yield new insight into the mechanisms involved in the development and progression of abdominal aortic aneurysms with the potential to identify new diagnostic and therapeutic pathways.

A recent analysis by finds an association between depression and non-home discharge after revascularisation for chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI). Jade Hiramoto, MD, Professor of Surgery in the UCSF Division of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery, has been named President-Elect of the UCSF Medical Staff.
